Librarians are Indispensable
I find that I see everything in my LIBE courses in relation to Senior-English classes. I know that this is natural, in that I am a Senior-English teacher, but I do try to look at things from both other-subject-matter teachers’, and the teacher librarian’s (TL) points of view.From literaryhoots.com |
I work closely with our TL and I know that other teachers in our school do as well. She helps plan our assignments, team teaches with us, and helps us find texts to help with our curriculum. She also does numerous jobs that help our students. From recommending to ordering books that the students want to read, to helping them learn research skills, or just making them feel welcome in a safe space; her diversity and participation in our school is tremendously important. Without her, much of what is important to our school culture would go by the wayside.
All of these things that our TL does, need to be done by people who “bring [people] and information together” (Riedling, Shake & Houston, 2013, p.99). TLs need to be a combination of Malcolm Gladwell’s “Connectors, Mavens and Salesmen”(p.34).
As connectors they don’t just connect people to other people (who may be able to help them). They are Mavens as they “accumulate knowledge” (Gladwell, 2002, p. 60) and Salesmen as they have the “skills to persuade us when we are unconvinced of what we are hearing” (Gladwell, 2002, p. 70). Although The TLs that I know may be more Mavens and less Salesmen, I think that they need to be a little of all in order to attract their clientele to the library and then get the patrons what they want.
The library, or as many call it the learning commons, is not what it used to be. It is no longer just books, it now includes DVDs, CDs, computers (where they can access anything on the internet), as well as those aforementioned books. With access to the internet, it has changed the way people do research. No longer do they need to go to a dusty basement to view microfiche, they can access primary resources from their own home, if they have been taught correctly.

As I continue to read, I find that there is the reoccurring topic of needing a knowledgeable person to help navigate the world of research. The TL is one person who can help students and teachers alike, in finding reliable and relevant information.
